Rainier Valley Rotary distributes dictionaries to 3rd Graders in elementary schools in Rainier Valley neighborhood of Seattle. Take a look at what 300 dictionaries looks like boxed and stacked. What's the value? There are a large number of kids in our neighborhood who don't have a strong tradition of speaking english in their family. They may be from a lot of countries and cultures. We are pleased that by giving hundreds of kids their own dictionary to take home and use, they may be able to look up a word in a library book. They may be able to look up synonyms when writing a composition, or look up the spelling of a word for a composition. We hear many stories from people in later years - how receiving a dictionary made a positive difference in their life. It takes a lot to make a society literate.
