I do not understand why they fucked with the lyrics. The boat is supposed to be coming UP the river. From civilization, up into the hills. This is about an isolated, rural place being visited by violence from downriver.
Margot sings that the boat is coming DOWN the river. What?! If there's a place upriver that has armed boats then they would go past all the time to get to the sea. There would be nothing strange about one coming down the river.
Grrrrrrrrrrr.

@sirdoug3 Yes, your right this is definitely a Civil War song.

@PavePaws FUCK OFF! No One Puts anyone to shame. It's a different take on a beautiful song. They couldn't have done this version if "ole Neil" handn't written the Goddamn thing now could they?

@salparadise63 When I was 19 I had my wages and walked into a record store and was just browsing and saw Caution Horses and took a punt and bought it and was in love ever since.

Margo's voice and the Junkies version puts ole Neil to shame.
It's a sad, lamenting song. MARGO A+

@sirdoug3 Yea thats what I've always thought, I can picture a rocky river bank with trees all around. I grew up on the Ohio river so it's easy for me tp picture.

Yes it is, I should have known, but no worries, thank you for your comment. I adore this song, it can bring me to tears...
The day I stopped reading music critics was the day I heard this song. The Caution Horses was trashed by these writers. So many years later, I just don't see it. This song sealed it for me. A completely different, most tender approach to Neil Young's genius, done with respect, respect for everyone, life, everything.

Very good cover by The Cowboy Junkies of this great tune of Neil's - don't think the images entirely go with the song, which is fine - I don't like vids. that are excessively literal in illustrating a song - think there is a middle ground way - I've always pictured this song taking place in some southern U.S. inland backwater river/woods area perhaps during the Civil war - but great Post!!
