In January 2007, Dr Herzog was interviewed after successfully performing what was at the time, the youngest patient receiving a cochlear implant in the St Louis area.
A cochlear implant was placed in a nine month old congenitally deafened baby. He then surgically placed an implant in the opposite ear six weeks later. The devices are activated and the child is now age appropriate for hearing and speech.
This helped me understand some of the reasons and complications of having a cochlear implant. When one thinks about it, it is truly a miracle that we can help these little patients achieve a normal hearing life. Thanks to all of you who have chosen this field to help with this difficult problem. When a parent is given that dreaded diagnosis "deaf", he/she feels helpless and afraid. When solutions like this are offered, the terrible burden and pain are lifted.
