LÉGENDE (Op. 201) by Ernest Shand (1868 -1924) played by Alex Timmerman on a British period guitar made in 1842 by the famous Italian/English Master luthier Louis Panormo (1784 -1862).

It is known that Ernest Shand owned at least two concert guitars. One of them being build by Louis Panormo and very similar with regard to the 'Spanish' model compared to the instrument used here.

That fact and my wish to stay as close to the sound Ernest Shand knew and appreciated, gave me the idea to perform Shand's wonderful 'Légende' on a 1842 Louis Panormo concert guitar for this video.
Louis Panormo was actve in London from 1819 till 1854 and known as the
'The Only Maker of Guitars in the Spanish Style'.

For this video an English period guitar was used strung with NYLGUT strings manufactured by the Italian string maker Compagny AQUILA - Corde Armoniche.

  • A lovely performance of a lovely composition! Humbling, how much music there is out there, how little of it most of us really know... Had I known this piece before, I would have gladly admitted that the 2nd movement of my Mimose had been influenced by it. Perhaps by some sort of mysterious telepathy across the ages...

  • Hi Victor,

    Thanks for the reply!

I'll check your Mimose tonight and see what connection we have there ;-).

    Many greetings, Alex.

  • @OrchestradiMandolini

Just that easy-going, bon vivant, "Edwardian flavor", I suppose...

  • Hi @victorkioulaphides, Yes, that's it most certainly!

  • An absolutely charming performance!

  • Hi @sonomabob,

    Thanks for commenting.

Shand was an artist and likely ahead of his time.

    Best,

    Alex.

  • Sounds pretty modern. I share Victor's comments
