This is a ten minute tour of one of the world's leading leather tanneries - Hermann Oak leather in St. Louis, Missouri. Keith Valley has been granted permission by Weaver Leather to post this condensed edited version of copyrighted footage (which they provided) for your online viewing. If you would like your very own copy of the whole 56 minute presentation, you may call Weaver Leather at (800) 932-8371 and order the DVD (product item number 65-9560). I enjoyed seeing all the process steps and just how much labor intensive time it takes to prepare each side of leather before we (saddle-makers and leather artist) get our hands on it. I would also like to give out a big "THANK YOU!" to each employee in each department that take part in each step of the process. Enjoy!

  • You gotta have a Federal Tax No. to order from Weaver. I used to order from Weaver in the 80's. But, one day they came up with this tax no.. So now I just go to the Leather Factory and buy the South American and Mexican Tooling Sides. Got no choice. I've been doing leather carving since 1973, the hides back then where a lot stiffer, and they where a lot of American Tanneries, I used to get my tooling sides from Tennessee Tanning Company. I was low price and you did not need a Tax No.

  • Shame you can't get this in the uk, I've heard good things about it!

  • that dude is ripped

  • Totally fascinating... My bree wallet is veg tanned and its beautiful. My red wing shoes are chrome tanned on the outside and veg tanned for the insole. i guess the video speaks for itself.

  • Thanks for posting that Keith. It is nice to know the work that goes into that before I start cutting and tooling on it.

  • Great video, a shame there are almost no tanneries left in the USA. Keep going.
