Indian Communist Party members have been seen carrying arms and ammunition inside their party office in Enayetpur. Theyve been fighting Maoist rebels, leaving several people dead, including two women.
According to reports, 500 rounds were fired in the gun battle that lasted five hours.
[Unidentified Villager]:
"We suddenly heard sounds similar to bullets being fired and of vehicles; it was difficult to identify the sounds... It started at around 5 (pm). It was very sudden...We were near our house when we saw more than a thousand people coming towards us from the jungle. We rushed inside our houses. We didn't face much difficulty, but a bullet hit one of the villagers in the leg."
Troops have moved in to take control of the situation.
Thousands have been killed in the Maoist insurgency that began in the late 1960s. Indias prime minister has described it as one of the gravest home-grown threats to internal security.
He says that rebel violence is on the rise in many states, and rebels are expanding their influence in the rural areas of east, central and southern India. They have increased attacks on railways, power and telecommunication networks to halt economic development.
