How can a site rank for keywords that aren't anywhere on its pages?

This is informative. Why are some people so negative about this.

@TechieGeek1 It's better to get the info direct from the source as opposed to a random forum from a random guy you can't trust.
I can quote Matt Cutts in Uni because of who he is so I can argue with my tutors when they're wrong about something etc. I can't it it's Joe Bloggs in a random forum
Matt is clarifying things and saying "yeah, this is deffo how we do it" which is needed

Thank you from someone who is not a techie.

@AlanScotch Google always gives me perfect results, and Google does support a quote syntax, if you encapsulate keywords/phrases with quotes, it will only show results that contain the quoted.

This why when you add a keyword to a search you get more results instead of less.
A prime example of the ARROGANCE of the Google Elite who think they can write an algorithm that is more intelligent than the person doing the search.
Eventually these egotistical algorithms will be the downfall of Google as people move to a SEARCH ENGINE that gives them the results they need.
Not a list of results that include items that contain none of the keywords searched for.

Land Lubber..... WTF? Another question wasted.
@TubesMaster I also hate it that Matt keeps answering questions that are found publicly online.
1) You can't have clients and be an SEO service if you keep asking Matt about SEO questions.
2) You could ask on any online forum for the basic questions.
Why can't Matt just record more videos where he talks to actual professionals that ask questions that aren't answered millions of times online?
