Fishing Trawler Sinks in Southern Ocean, New Zealand

Three sailors die and three remain missing after a South Korean fishing vessel sinks in the Southern Ocean near New Zealand. There is little hope of finding more survivors.

A South Korean trawler named the Oyang 70 sank in the Southern Ocean near New Zealand with three sailors confirmed dead and three others missing who most likely didn't make it.

45 survivors were rescued from life rafts by another fishing vessel in the area minutes after the Oyang 70 sank off the coast of South Island before dawn.

The Korean-registered Oyang 70 activated a distress beacon and made a mayday call before sinking.

[Mike Roberts, Rescue Coordination Center]:
"There may be a missing life raft still. We understand that five are accounted and have been recovered, but we've had other information there were six on the ship, so we could actually be looking for three people on the life raft."

Roberts says the 270 foot vessel, chartered by a New Zealand fishing company, sank quickly.

[Mike Roberts, Rescue Coordination Center]:
"All we're aware of is that the ship appeared to capsize while recovering their fishing gear and it happened very quickly ten minutes to sink... which is really quite catastrophic."

A New Zealand air force plane is helping to search for the missing men, who include the boat's captain.

The three dead crew members were identified as Indonesians.

Part of the Yoyang rusty old shit bucket fleet fished out of Whanganui, NZ, in the early 80's. Thats exactly what they were then rusty old shit buckets, no surprise the fucking YOYANG 70 sank! Tangaroa 1 - Yoyang 70 - 0/Fuck all!
