Can Anyone Be Hypnotized?
Scott G. Pelton, CH
Myth 1. My mind is strong. I don't think I can be hypnotized.
Most people think that only weak minded simpletons would let themselves be hypnotized, particularly if they have seen a stage show. I know I wouldn't want to be clucking like a chicken up on a stage and I doubt you would either! If someone volunteers for a stage act they are willing to have good humored fun. The truth is that everyone can be hypnotized with a few exceptions: Children under the age of five because they lack the attention span, someone with Alzheimer's, or someone with an IQ below 40. As a matter of fact, each one of us is using hypnosis in some form every single day of our lives either consciously or unconsciously.
Myth 2. I went for hypnosis but I heard everything and I remembered what she said. I couldn't have been hypnotized.
That we won't remember the hypnosis session has probably come about due to another common misconception which equates the state of hypnosis with sleep.
A lot of people believe that when they are hypnotized they will not be aware of anything that is happening around them. Yet, if you lost all connection with the hypnotist, how could you follow the instructions?
While the level of awareness of your surroundings may shift to some degree, you will still be aware of the hypnotist or her voice. The better you are able to play the game of "let's pretend" and immerse yourself in your subjective reality (inner world experiences), the less will you be aware of your surroundings in the way that you are accustomed to.
Actually our senses are heightened by 30% while hypnotized. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness or focused concentration.
You have been in hypnosis many times. I'll prove it to you. Have you ever driven your car highway miles and not remembered too much of the trip? Have you ever looked for something and then go back to where you already looked and there it is? Have you ever daydreamed? We have all had these experiences so we have all already experienced some form of hypnosis.
Myth 3. Hypnosis is mind control. How does it work?
We are all motivated by pain or pleasure. If you know you should be doing something and have been putting it off (like dieting) it is because you are associating more pain with doing it then not doing it. But I don't like being fat you say? I know, but the immediate gratification of the chocolate overrides the desire to be thin. One of the reasons why hypnosis works so well is because it changes our associations to pain and pleasure. Under hypnosis you experience so much pleasure at visualizing your body slim and healthy that there is simply no desire for the chocolate.
The goal of a hypnosis session is the successful installation of a desired outcome deep into the subconscious mind from where it eventually expresses automatically without any further conscious activity. What does that mean? It seems almost effortless.
We disempower ourselves when we choose limiting beliefs. We were created perfectly so these limiting beliefs were learned. Hypnosis helps us see all the new and exciting options available to us and we empower ourselves whenever we open ourselves to more options.
Myth 4. I'll be out of control and that scares me.
How much control does the hypnotist have? The hypnotist has no power over you. You have total control. I didn't understand that when I went for hypnosis 4 years ago. I wanted to lose quit smoking and went to a hypnotist. The man I went to was unkempt and weighed about 400 pounds. He smelled like a dirty ashtray. I didn't trust him. Luckily, I didn't leave because it worked and I am a non smoker!
Now I understand that we would never say or do anything under hypnosis that we would not normally say or do.
If you think about it, people who play the role of a hypnotist are not only those who label themselves as hypnotist, but can be anyone who is skilled with using language and capturing our imagination.
We are being influenced, or hypnotized, every day by advertisers. Doubt it? Winston tastes good like a _________ should. How many years has that been off the air? What about "How do you spell relief?"
It is always up to you, whether you are having a session with a hypnotist, listening to hypnosis recording or receiving information through some other media - from a doctor, a lawyer, a salesman, an ad in a paper, watching news, reading books or newspapers - whether you want to accept or reject the ideas and statements offered. For that reason we say that "all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis" and that you are always in control.
So, what is required to succeed with hypnosis? A true willingness to make a change in your life is the only prerequisite to success.
