the fish looked exhausted. looks like the release was a 2nd thought since you had him on a stringer. If your going to release fish plan ahead and get them back asap.

Good catch and nice release. Well done. Just remember that gills are very delicate organs. Passing a string through the gills is not a very good idea if you are planning to release the fish afterwards. Those gills must have gotten damaged by the string. That is probably why the fish found a hard time to gather some oxigen and energy when you tried to revive it. Some released fish do recover from gill damage, but some never do--they die little after the release.
