This is a very basic water / ocean "test scene"
It was made without any third party plug ins - 100% stock mx

It was rendered in Mental ray 3.5

It was made with a standard max shader, using raytrace for reflections and refractions and a mix+noise map for the displacement slot

There are 3 teapots submerged in the 'water' at different depths and one red teapot above. The geometry is a simple plane.

Its taken me ages to get it to look decent.
Comments and improvements plz ^___^

Please note that the emphasis is on the water surface animation (the actual waves) not the actual scene (lighting/ realism)

  • Thanks very much for the material settings, I've tried to move the noise offsets around but nothing appears to work. Am I supposed to modify all XYZ offsets in all 3 Noise maps per frame to produce the waves?

  • Use the autokey function, example: set key on frame 0, then enable autokey then go to frame 100 or something and change the offset values after you're done disable autokey

  • hey thts awsome could u make a tut on how to do that please, i would be very greatful

    Thank You

  • This was more of an experiment, and I don't recommend using this method for actual work, however, I added a link to an image with the max material on it to the 'more info' on this video
