Memories of Chief Illiniwek

I lived in Champaign for 15 years (1974-1989) and one of my fondest memories was the Three-in-one and watching the Chief dance. He was never a mascot to me...he was a symbol to those 18,000 people at the Assembly Hall that got together for the game. Even if the team was losing, the Chief raised our spirits and brought us together. Going to Illini basketball games were such a big part of my childhood. How sad that future generations can't savor those memories I can.

The chief will be back. You just have to wait long enough.

QUOTE: "But to others he was a mockery of Native American people and traditions." What a crock of shit! I saw Chief Illiniwek for the first time in the early 70's at a Illini and Buckeye football game. At 12 years of age I was mesmorized by his native dance, of a people I knew little about. I feel the good of those native people can be expressed and remembered more through the display of pride and majestic power that is Chief Illiniwek!

I would go to illinois games growing up and admire the chief tradition and look forward to going to college and carrying on the tradtion. Now it is all taken away from me before i got the chance to experience it in full. BRING BACK THE CHIEF!

eventually right!!!you got it;you came on the point :)
it`s so scornfully to native americans, that there are so much mascots and steretypes, using false native american types and missenterpret them, making most of the people stupid and unknown about the real native amercians, their traditions, lifestyle and culture.
(please apologise my bad english)

justoneluckygirl, you are a MORON! The CHIEF was NOT a mockery of Native American people and traditions. He was nothing of the sort. Are liberal, do-gooder idiots like you and PETA going to attack schools that have animals as mascots too now? Shame on you, you moron. Because of people like you, a wonderful tradition has passed. It's time that this hypersensitivity stopped!
Just saw this after looking at the video of the homecoming game yesterday (10/1/11) where the Chief made an appearance. I wish I had gone, and could have been a part of it. Great video and great music. The credits say the song is "Horizon" do you know the artist? I'd love to download this song.

@NamNam421 The piece is actually called Into the West and it was originally performed by Annie Lennox. You can find the vocal rendition on the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King soundtrack. The piece that is in my video came from an accompanying CD for a book of violin music that I have, so I'm not sure where you could download this exact rendition.
