After you add the overlay, you have to then add in a new trail by drawing it in. The GPS track is only there as an overlay so you know where to draw the trails. This is especially useful in wooded areas where the trail paths are not visible in the satellite image.

Steps no longer work, after adding in URL to KML file, it does not give option to publish and save.

It should be pointed out that your phone's GPS is not going to be super accurate, and you may be generating data that's not going to represent the trail precisely. You can help to overcome this by 1) using as much info from the satellite image as possible; 2) walking out the trail with your GPS multiple times - different days - to get an idea of the scatter in your phone's GPS signal.
