No, he's the first enlisted Sikh in the US Army, since the early 1980s (when the US Army's leadership instituted a policy requiring male soldiers to have short hair and no beards). That was the impediment which prevented many American Sikhs from enlisting. As this report makes clear, this young man got a waiver, because of his language skills. There's a US Army captain who's a Sikh, and won a similar exemption, so he can wear his turban and beard.

Just so people are clear, Sikhs are excellent soldiers. They are widely respected and feared in the India army, and have been active soldiers since ancient times. They have a long history of being warriors, and they (used to) always have to carry a knife with them at all times. The Brits used them during their 'ownership' of India, and some still serve in the British army to this day.
