This animation demonstrates the interior structure of the earbone (periotic bone) of a Pacific White-sided dolphin. Although this animation gives the illusion that the bone is merely a hollow shell, it is actually very hard solid bone (with a density similar to teeth) containing the hollow tubular structures shown (cochlea, semicircular canals, various ducts and vestibules). This digital reconstruction was built from high-definition CT scans generously shared by Hans Thewissen at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
