The moronic "10 year old banger" car scrappage scheme runs into trouble with New Labour as usual not thinking in detail about their proposals, and car companies not wanting to take part until the government gets their finger out their backside to sort out the schemes mess they created in the first place.

What this scheme will do for the UK motor industry is next to nothing. The VED car tax is set to rise drastically, as promised in various budgets. Those that still buy new cars will buy imported cars, not ones made in the UK. And once those that have bought their new cars have them, what does that do to new car sales - nothing!

What this scheme does for the environment is even more damage. The environmental cost of making a new car is high. This compares badly with keeping an old car, even if it (allegedly) has a more inefficient engine.

The car scrappage scheme was an idea thought up by a government who have no brain cells between them.

Recorded from Sky News, 18 May 2009.

  • Its not a good idea at all is it! Its all about cash. This is not recycling, its scrapping perfectly good cars that are almost as clean running as the new ones that replace them. The production of a new car is hugely polluting. Yet the public fall for it. Going green my A*****e. AND the £2000 saving on your new PRICE HIKED car is more than lost by the time you drive it home!!!

So, sell your old car for a few hundred, and buy one a year old or so and save way more than £2k SIMPLE!

  • Just another DECEPTION by this cheating Labour government.

    Lie after lie after lie.....

  • Usually the combined mpg is pretty good these days, it uses a set speed/time alternation and was tested to be pretty well in tune for real driving by a few place (most known to the public is probably Fifth Gear).

But yes, they usually show the best value first, but some do show the combined cycle along side.

Problem today is the weight, as you say... engine efficiency gets better but is killed off by weight... and safety isn't the biggest weight killer, its known that crumpling helps safety.

  • Debt is the idea.

This keeps you under control, after all a 'slave in debt' will hardly risk losing his job fighting injustice, etc.

New labour slavery, soon to be replaced with Conservative slavery.

  • I remember back in the 1980s the Austin Metro HLE did a claimed 61.5 or 60.5 mpg at a constant 56mph.

You look at the equivalent mileage today - it's hardly any better if at all!

    So much for progress.

P.S. I think that's why they use kilometres per hour and 'extra urban' etc, to hide the facts.

  • Yea you are right.

Government likes people with new cars, as they can easily increase your VED because the car is brand new.

Older cars are generally lighter too, and emissions wise can be just as good, if not better than an old one.

Also scrapping the older cars, means there is less old cars on the market for lower values, as people are "scrapping" them instead of selling... so people that cannot afford a new car, has less choice or even none at all in selection of car...

  • Another good point is the fact that an older car will still allow you to do some of your own maintenance if you wish to save money : a modern car is full of 'black boxes' and pc interfaces. You'll be lucky if you can put air into the tyres without it being a 'dealership job'.

    Consumerism stinks.

  • Yes thats it must be sound and have an MOT. Car bashing is not the way to save the economy. I thought wanton destruction was supposed to be a crime, but not now in Gordon Browns fantasy land.

  • I think old car send to scrap is wrong, When my old car I used to drive is 11 yrs old which is in very good condition and got 9 months mot and 4 months road tax which is good then I decide I'm looking for a younger car I got 56 reg car, Then my son ask me to look for parts at scrap yard I was shocked to see that my old car is in scrap that my old car really nothing wrong with it so fuck the government

  • Yes i see your point ;and the system is flawed, but buying a Nissan or Kia is no bad thing. There're better for reliability than an old Fords.

  • I would rather have the Sierra than any rubbish KIA.

Yeah it gets the Motor industry back on track BUT people are going to be more in debt and labour goes full circle.

Yes you get 2 grand off but what if you choose an equivalent model to the one you scrapped? you pay more in road tax so bye bye 2 grand!

It's all one big con, keep the old cars on the road!

And that poor Corsa at the end :( chuck a brand new Kia in instead lol
