Great post! I've been wanting to try out that kit for some time as a guitar stompbox. What are the values on the 2 pots?

For mine I took an additional wire from the gain pot to a mix with Point e. I used a dual pot 100K to mix. The pot values may not be optimal - it just reflects what I had around - experiment with different values.

This is from memory! looking at the pdf from maplin
I take out R10 and have my guitar in join at s of r10 so basically it feeds into IC2. Take speaker connection x1-2 to pin1 of 100K pot (pin3 of pot to gnd) pin2 of pot where connection 1 of the mic would be if I had put that in. OUt put for the amp comes from point E of where R10 would be.

Nice job, a question could you send the schematic diagram or detailed discription of how exactly this is wired. And would the velleman kit that uses the ht8950a chip also work?

@scottsober1 I don't know the velleman circuit - I havn't examined their circuit in detail but it looks like it has the same parts - ht8950 and an lm386 opamp. It has an additional mic sensitivity control My gut feel is that you could do something similar.
