If you have ever been told by your doctor your knees are painful because of 'Wear and Tear', this is what your knee is likely to look like...the rough white substance on the surface you can see is the now roughend cartillage - the other tissue that is very obvious (the redish colored band like soft tissue) is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) which in this instance is intact...the surgeon is trying to clean the knee joint, debride the roughend surface and generally make the surfaces of the knee smoother and therefore more comfortable for the patient. He is also trying to create a number of micro fractures on the surface of the knee, this causes a small amnont of bleeding which helps to eventually lubricate the joint and make the weight bearing surfaces much more comfortable.
Likely SYMPTOMS of somebody requiring this type of surgery include: Swelling, Irregualar/inconsistent knee pain, constant dull ache, exercised enduced pain and swelling, worse when twisting i.e. getting out of bed or a car
