It's almost a kind of foreshadowing, when Johnny looks at Sarah when he's hugging JJ, after telling the kid to call him "just Johnny".
Some seasons later--In the very last scene of the very last episode--Sarah smiles at Johnny, the rift between them resolved at last...and says, "Go be with your son."
Thus, when the series ends, we can infer that at last...JJ can call Johnny "Dad".

I think this is the most beautiful scene in all of the Dead Zone. AMH does such a great job right at the end there of expressing how much it must hurt Johnny not to be raising his own son.

Nicole deBoer has this cute little quirk of bouncing in her seat a bit, like she's saying, "pay attention, folks, this is REALLY important, and I just can't wait to tell you!"
It's part of her charm, her enormous William-Shatner energy.
