TANNAT WINE STORY
The Tannat wine story is very similar to that of Malbec, having been transported across the seas from Southern France in the late 1800s by French Basques. Malbec became Argentina's national wine grape and was identified among Argentinas best and finest wines of authentic origin. (More Tannat wine history)
Enter the noble Tannat: the Tannat grape was carried by the French Basques to Uruguay and first planted there in the 1870s, where it adapted perfectly to the local soil and climate.
Tannat wine originated in an area known as the Madiran, which lies at the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in southwestern France. Tannat wine continues to be made in the Basque country, most notably in the tiny appellation of Irouléguy, on the Spanish border.
