Yes, his daughter got emergency surgery in NY (when he was still playing for the Jazz, during the Western Conference Semifinals), but he was looking for a city that had the right combination of specialists -- something that Salt Lake City didn't have -- to treat his daughter on a regular basis. He had 6 or 7 cities in mind, of which LA was one. The Lakers signed him, and his daughter then got treatment in LA.

Yet, he went to a team that is EVEN FURTHER AWAY called the LA Lakers.
Do you get it yet? The Jazz graciously let him out of his contract early so he could move FURTHER away from where his daughter was getting treatment...
If his daughter was getting treatment in CALIFORNIA, I would understand, yet that's not what happened, she was getting treatment in NEW YORK!
