Firefighters Watch House Burn

If your house catches on fire in America, the assumption is that you can call 911, and the fire department will come, because these are government services that your tax payer dollars automatically go towards, no options. But not for one Tennessee family who had the option to pay for the service and never paid the fee, so when their house was burning the fire department stood by and watched. What does it means for Americans to pick and choose, and for public services, to become private. Mike Elk labor journalist and contributing editor for In These Times says firefighter services are a public good rather than having to pay for fees. Katherine Mangu-Ward, Senior editor of Reason magazine and Reason.com argues people should be able to pick and choice what services they want.

3. i live about 50 miles from where this story happened. the fire dept DID respond to possibly rescue trapped people, but if a firefighter got hurt, his insurance would not cover him because this was a considered a volunteer act on him as an individual. the peopl knew beforehand that they were supposed to pay the fee.

I am a firefighter and this is a crock of shit. As firefighters we are swore to protect the citizens of our areas. $75 dollars isn't a good reason to stand there and watch someones house burn down to the ground.

@SacrificedAlive Second, i love America and it's people, but America is not defined by it's economic system, it is defined by it's sovreignity and it's sovreignity is based on the will of the people. the people are what make this country what it is, everything else is just relative. @SacrificedAlive first of all, no country is Communist, because Communism is a stateless and classless society and neither are they fully Socialist either. yes i do, i feel everone should have the same opportunities as i do. there are millions of Americans under poverty, in fact 80% of the world is in poverty. i am not a Communist for self, i am a Communist because i am for humanity as a whole my struggle is not about me. what can't stand is people being thrown under the bus.

@SacrificedAlive i never said Stalin was a great leader, he had his good things, but mostly bad. my role models are Marx, Lenin and Che Guevara, but there are alot of propaganda against leaders like Stalin and Mao who did make mistakes, but name a leader or administration that hasn't, like Bush. Deaths under Stalin weren't no 50,000,000+, more 7.5 million. maybe you should read the soviet archives that are available online douche.

@SacrificedAlive i've read about the russian revolution and Soviet history alot of the numbers are sensationalized for example the Ukranian famine caused the deaths of 3 million people not just because of Stalin's collectivization policy, but because of the hoarding of the rich kulaks who killed their cattle and burned their wheat fields which caused food shortages and epidemics.
