Forgot to mention, make sure you change the oil once a year.

Age is stamped on a metal hoop under the hood/helmet at the top. Check into the windmill forums on the internet for more info.

These things run forever. Just a little yearly maintenance, and you're good to go.

how can you tell how old they are? are there any signs on the blade or anything?

i was just wondering cause we have one in a property we just bought and i dont know how old it is, i just know they stoped making the chicago ones in 1958. ours looks exactly like yours, even the same latter thing on the side of the stand.

@ilovemusicd00d My great grandmother told me when it was installed. I'm sure if you get real close there's probably some kind of ID tag, but I wouldn't trust climbing all the way up there on a rickety tower holding 1600+lbs of cast iron at the top. This particular model is a 702, and was a brand new model at the time, introduced in 1930. My advice is to ask whoever owned the property before you if they have any info on it. Good luck!

Well, that brings back memories. When I was young, my granddad had a couple of them on the farm. Best water in the world! Would ride up and down on the sucker rod. They were, get this, made out of wood. Had to climb up about 30 feet on each one every year and grease them. Had a govenor on the vain so when the wind would blow to hard, it would tilt the vain to angle the mill away from the wind and slow it down. Don't remeber the brake though. Thanks for posting this. @kdksiren Thanks for the comment! I think some of the towers were made with wood for decoration. Me and my brother both climbed it and got a picture on the top, it is big up close. We also rode on the sucker rod too lol. We have a well on the north end of my grandpa's property that apparently has the cleanest water ever. Ever since my great grandfather died, no one lives there full time to take care of the land.
