Ripped from the album "Between the Lines", 1975. (c)Janis Ian

Light a Light

I hear your voice in ev'ry corridor
See your face in ev'ry picture frame
I feel your eyes in ev'ry starry sky
Lover, am I coming home again?

Now am I humble, who once was proud
Now am I silent, who once was loud
Now am I waiting for the sound of your saying:
Lover, am I coming home again?

When you're gone the sun don't shine
Light a light, light a light for me
Bring me back home again

And how we loved 'til the years were days
How we laughed all our tears away
And now the time begins to fade
Lover, am I coming home again?

There's a wisdom in the teachings
of the old familiar songs
And a sorrow in repeating
all the old familiar wrongs
And a lesson to be learned,
though I've know all day long
Lover, am I coming home again?

Light a light, light a light for me
Light a light, light a light for me
Light a light, light a light for me
Bring me back home again
Bring me back home again

  • Isn't it great to hear a tender song sung tenderly, without all the awful vocal gymnastics employed by so many of today's female singers? Less is more. Thanks for posting.

  • Janis Ian has a very angelic voice that you just want to listen to all the time.

  • She really is a fabulous singer and her songs were not given the recognition she should have had. Though in spite of the opposition she had a huge following. The gay community at the time was underground identified with society's child something fierce. Hearing her now is just sensational. I love you tune because you can see your favorites as well as hear them and to see the fourteen year old Janice is mind boggling I was 18. Stevie Wonder woke me to a new music-Janice woke me to a new mind

  • The music is so good and she is still who she always has been, so you don't take the time to make a play list, just play one after another. From 14 years old to 55 with someone you stil know and memories you love to remember. It really doesn't get any better.

  • What chrisharro said....thank you...

  • between the lines is one of my desert island discs

  • Janis Ian is my favorite singer/songwriter EVER....she feels her lyrics like no-one else and sang to my heart.

  • I have been lucky enough not only to have been to eight of her concerts but to have talked to her at length after several of them. She is as kind and generous of a person as she is a prolific singer, songwriter, and musician.

  • ...the harmony...i hear claire bay here andt i

think i hear jeff l. also..

  • I am a 18 year-old Portuguese girl and love this song so much! I love you Janis, I am a huge fan of yours!

  • Perfection.
