I've always loved Judith Ivey, and had no idea she could sing like this! Fabulous! saw the oroginal production at the Winter Garden in 1971, and I will be seeing the revival at the Marquis in December.
Haunting indeed. The soft singing is unforgettable, and if the climax is strident this is a LIVE performance, not a studio recording manipulated to death. As usual, sadly, the moron saxophone is three times too loud... especially horrible here because it is blasting over Ivey's beautiful pianissimi on the subdominant harmony (which most Sallys do not attempt)... I imagine the show was a 'misfire' with such horrible noncasting as Danner, Williams, and Harrison, but Ivey must have been great...

If this is the Roundabout production I saw it. It was haunting and quite avant-garde, I practically thought I was tripping during the very long dream sequence. And Treat Williams was just great, exactly what Broadway needs, actors who can sing not singers who can't act. Critics always want the first production they saw repeated ad-infinitum.
How can Sondheim not realize that Bernadette Peters makes his songs sound like voice-coaching exercises? She's just plastic.
There is another version of this same show {shot from much higher up in the cheap seats} where her intonation on the final kind was much better. I love this production.
I was in this version of FOLLIES; I wonder if you have the recording of the whole show, and if you do, would you consider putting the OPENING ("Beautiful Girls") on YouTube, or even sending it to me?
