Mac OS X can only read the NTFS file system found on most USB/Portable HDD devices, I talk about 3 possible solutions you could use:

#1 Format the USB/Portable HDD to FAT32
#2 Purchase 'NTFS for Mac' http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
#3 Install Windows on your Mac (Virtualization)

  • Hi & Thanks!

I partitioned my Toshiba Portable Canvio 1T hard drive into 4 partitions: 1 for my iMac Time Machine, 1 for my MacBook Time Machine, 1 for my PC back up, and 1 for my Media. The first 2 in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, and the second 2 in MS-DOS(FAT) format.

My problem is that my PC doesn't see my Media MS-DOS(FAT) partition (maybe because I already put some media from my Mac?). Is there a way to format again only this partition without loosing the data on the others?

  • @tamaras82 You can reformat the partitions, though adding data from your Mac to the FAT partitions wouldn't be what is causing your issues. If I was in the same situation as you, I would setup my Mac so it could write to NTFS drives.

  • Is this the MBP 2011 you are using? If yes? How has been its performance? Any troubles? Like freeze or wireless dropping or anything at all?

    Thanks!

  • @deepsukhwani Nah, it is the 2011 iMac. :)
