Unless the people in question are brainwashed (upon which I make no comment) its more likely that people can see it, but chose to ignore them based on observations of others. This now becomes an issue of ethics, which actually makes a lot of sense considering the ideological power of marraige having died down dramatically since the second major woman's rights movement.

....individual characteristics that go beyond social and biological parameters. I would suggest that neither men nor women are particularly good at this. Hence the complaints from all sides.

And here we have the problem. Although to a certain degree we can say that society and biology set those parameters, each individual decides which of those factors they value and which they don't.

It could be argued that it is those with the least intelligence, or maturity (experience or ability to learn from example) that take whole-cloth what biology and society say is desirable either to choose a mate, or be chosen as a mate.

So, both men and women would do better to look at...

In short:

1: Perspective of the female as a control for setting the parameters of what they want

2: Social expectations setting the degree and number of parameters (expectations) and how they are CAPABLE of meeting those parameters so the women get what they want

3: And the practical evidence stating that, from a biological standpoint, the meeting of those expectations will result in a surge in the population of those that meet these parameters.
