Sexual Harassment on the Streets of Cairo

Being an Egyptian woman is to accept sexual harassment as daily routine, according to a recent report from the Egyptian Center for Womens Rights (ECWR). The study outlines, 60 percent of Egyptian women and 98 percent of foreign women are harassed on a daily basis.

This is not a new problem. In fact, the problem has been simmering silently since the fall of 2006, when dozens of men and boys attacked and assaulted women outside a downtown a Cairo cinema. In a mob style attack, the perpetrators attempted to grope and tear at any passing womans clothes in the October attack.

Harassment of women is an act of aggression. There is no excuse for criminal behaviour!

When I was 8, my heavily pregnant mother held my hand walking through Cairo. Disgusting men pinched her bottom constantly. We left Eqypt ASAP and I still feel deep disgust and anger about this... I am now 35!

Nothing has changed. Eqypt is still full of uneducated, backwards, disgusting pigs who have no self control or respect. Stop apologising for them and demand better education!

look in America where all the women dress alot more fancy with bikinis and they hardly wear anything, they never get harrased even in places where no one is standing that just shows respect to women

Here's the solution for women who are harassed by these useless men. There's a very, very hot pepper called 'bhut jolokia'. It's the world's hottest pepper. Take several of them, crush them into tiny pieces, fill it up with water in a plastic spray container, then shake it. If one of those trash come over to grab you, spray it directly into their eyes and then run. They'll be screaming bloody Mary and fall on their face, crying like a wuss that they are. It'll take a while for them to recover.

just to disagree with salmamourad. This WAS a problem 30 years and 20 years, and 10 years ago! Prior to the 2006 Eid violence, men did this at mulids and other crowded places, during the evening "walking period," and God help you if you go into a cinema.

You're now recognizing the failure of religion. The Bible gives man dominance over all plants and animals, including women.

American Independence rejected government power through fear-of-God. ~130 years later, women finaly get to vote, which is pretty good when compared to 1,000's of years of gender oppression. Laws based upon logic and reason will set us all Free, keep us Equal, and provide Justice for All. But, law based upon superstitions give you 'God's Chosen' ruling over 'hethens.'

You are missing the whole point. The authorities (men) mark female victims as guilty for 'tempting' them and blame women for the loss of jobs.

When men are attacked by women, what do you think will happen? Will men, already 'threatened' by female equality, sit idly by while their 'manhood' is taken away from them?

Learn from Ghandi and MLK: the oppressed can never be free if they lower themselves to the level of their oppressors. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.

The problem is that the prices of everything went so high that marriage is very expensive , a lot of the harrasing men aren't properly educated , Islam has very serious "laws" againest rape and harrasement but they aren't applied in most countrys. And please don't tell me that open sex is the solution. Harrasing women was never mentioned 30 years ago , this is a consequence of many problems in the 3rd world countrys.
