The recent generations have been bathed in connecting technology from birth, says futurist Don Tapscott, and as a result the world is transforming into one that is far more open and transparent. In this inspiring talk, he lists the four core principles that show how this open world can be a far better place.
Talk by Don Tapscott.

He doesn't realize it but he has just summed up the opinion of the Internet towards so many topics like sharing, cooperation and collaboration.
i believe you describe his and our opinion as Common sense.

I guess I'm to cynical for this. In my view this is the way things have always been, just at a faster cycle rate.

The image I would like to see is an individual "bird" who can freely choose between many different swarms, getting connected or disconnected from them whenever he/she pleases. At any given time, you should be able to be active in one swarm, several swarms at once, or none at all, walking the path of individual discoveries alone. This is what I call freedom. This is what I call power. Being confined to one huge swarm for life is neither.

Great stuff, I agree with most of it. But the starling metaphor was bad choice. I'm absolutely terrified with it. One problem is that it erases all individuality, and, as a matter of fact, individual creativity as well. You just follow the herd. Another, that starlings are ruled by instinct, which makes it sort of innocent. Humans will always use their intellect - and institutions will use their resources and influence! - to engineer, manipulate, and abuse the collective work for their interest.

to the folks who think that what the gold miner did was wrong, how does it differ from The Olympics? You spend your own time, money, work, talent, and more often than not, it is all for naught...We need more "intellectual Olympics".....I'm not saying his idea was perfect, but it certainly wasn't so different...
