Episode 1: The Language of Science.
Physicist Jim Al-Khalili travels through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries. Its legacy is tangible, with terms like algebra, algorithm and alkali being Arabic in origin and at the very heart of modern science. For Baghdad-born Al-Khalili this is also a personal journey and he uncovers a diverse, outward-looking culture, fascinated by learning and obsessed with science.

  • @moncherry801 Maybe because we live in a time where the average Muslim is looked at as a terrorist? Maybe because Islam is now dubbed as a religion of hate and misdemeanor? Maybe because the world super powers keep on going to overbalanced 'wars' against Muslim nations, where the public is treated like backwater rubbish? When you put all those things together, Muslims reach out and try to prove their worth. Just like the Jews did after WWII. Pride arises from surviving hardship, remember that.

  • @TheSaltyAdmiral wrong

  • i love the fact the Arab world has played such a massive role in man-kinds development- it only confirms that all the worlds best are represented by all the world. Peace be, truly , upon us all - even the neocons,

  • 4 people dont like... hmmm

  • @Algamazigh

No, no religion can be the religion of science because the whole idea of suprerstition is incompatible with sciene.

  • @moncherry801 Why is your grammar, spelling, and punctuation so horrible? Are you a non-English speaker (nothing wrong with that!), or are you just an idiot (who has the nerve to call others "uneducated")?

  • @moncherry801 From your spelling, grammar, and punctuation, some would say YOU are pretty uneducated as well.

  • @moncherry801 I'm pretty sure most Muslims in Europe have to go through dealing with bigots as yourself. Not a very friendly and democratic environment. If you truly believe your European governments are democratic and 'civilized' you are truly living the lie of the masses.

  • @moncherry801 Calling Muslims a 'people' is hardly appropriate.

  • @MihaiBorcan You're missing the point.

Its not about the facts, which some mind you, were still discovered by these scholars. It was more a question of scientific collective method and awareness. It was the ability, in a world where everything was partitioned into tradition and origin, to merge it all together and come to a more systematic way of managing the world around them. What you are saying is comparable to saying Rome was nothing but a pile of reinvented Etruscan values. Silly, isn't it?
