I always thought that Lotus was about Michael Stipe's life, were he went through a hard time and was coming out of it.

@BucksStudent I think that the song structure is often traditional, Peter and Mike set up the structure. Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, liberating bridge, chorus is a common structure. But Michael's lyrics most definitely defy tradition. A traditional songwriter writes lyrics which are understood when heard, but Michael's lyrics are quite often difficult for the listener to understand. In this interview all 3 REM members say that they don't know what Michael's writing about, even Michael! : )

As a songwriter myself, Stipe is one of my main influences, and what he does defies what is tradition and song structure.
