  • This is chèo, not cải lương.

    Chèo is Northern Viet opera.

Cải lương is Southern Viet opera.

    The two are distinctly different.

  • great :x

  • @lovestoryim Here is a clip from Nguyen Vinh Bao, filmed by the humble professor Tran Quang Hai the author of the article you sent me a link of. Mr. Nguyen Vinh Bao is a Professor of Vietnamese Traditional Music and was the head of the Southern Vietnam Traditional Music section in the Saigon Conservatory before the invasion of North Vietnam. In this clips he explains why and how Vietnamese music is completely different to Chinese music: search Maestro Vinh Bao's teaching of Dan Tranh in Youtube

  • @qlvnch123 Cai Luong was born from Don Ca Tai Tu and acting of Hat Boi (though it's adjusted for more fitting). That's why it's influenced a bit from Chinese Peking opera, some of script came from China, even some of instrumentals.Anyway, influence doesn't mean it's bad.Learning the quintessence from the other arts and creating from them is great.

  • @lovestoryim

Cai luong is NOT influenced by chinese opera. Cai luong is not strictly pentatonic and has its own mode, scales and musical pieces. If you said that the acting was influced by the French it would be right but when you say it is influenced by the chinese, you are utterly wrong. CAI LUONG IS NOT INFLUENCED BY CHINESE OPERA... IN FACT LISTEN TO IT (TYPE CAI LUONG/ VONG CO... SOUNDS DIFFERENT, NO PERCUSSION, NOT PENTATONIC AND HAS WESTERN INFLUENCE NOT CHINESE INFLUNECE.

  • @nicodagger this scene is from a piece called Quan Am Thi Kinh, the whole piece is long but this extraction is about a girl called Thi Mau visiting a buddhist temple, which is supposed to be a respectful place but she starts acting out bubbly and inappropriate: singing, talking loudly and even teasing the young monk there.

  • hope someone can post the whole ( quan an thi kinh ) that could be nice

  • lovestoryin

thanks! your explanation makes me admire the Vietham opera more, because it is so complex and rich. I am interested in the translation, whatever you can do, I will appreciate it! Vietnam has such a beautiful and long, rich history!
