House of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park, MD (just outside of Washington DC) is a dealer for Alvarez and Yairi acoustic guitars. Here we have Mark Sylvester, one of our teachers, demonstrating the ADY1 Yairi Ani DiFranco Signature guitar. It is based on the Bob Weir design for Alvarez-Yairi, which is a very sought-after model for acoustic-electric players. It has an extra-deep mahogany folk body and the System 600T electronics installed--one of the most natural-sounding acoustic systems on the market. The top is solid Canadian Cedar which produces exceptionally brilliant tone with tremendous sustain, clarity and tightly focused bass. Couple this with the mahogany back and sides and you get lush, full-bodied tone with amazing projection. The guitar uses Alvarez' patented direct-coupled bridge, which provides maximum transfer of string energy to the top. Individual saddles ensure balanced string response and superb articulation.

When Alvarez debuted their signature Ani DiFranco guitar a few years ago, we knew we had to carry it--being huge fans of both Alvarez and Ani! To say this guitar is "distinctive looking" is an understatement. Besides the golden yellow satin finish, the other distinctive feature is the large gray pickguard, which protects the guitar from Ani's signature "percussive" style of playing. Even if you're not necessarily an Ani fan, you may find this appealing if you use some of the same kind of percussive techniques.

This model has been discontinued by Alvarez and is no longer available. To inquire about other guitars we carry, please contact HMT directly at hmtmail@hmtrad.com or 301-270-9090, or visit our website at www.hmtrad.com.

On this video Mark is playing two original selections from his CD "Music For Solo Guitar." The first is called "American Gypsy Pt 2;" the second is "I'll Not Be Weary." Tab for these songs is available at www.marksylvester.net.

  • oh yeah. Nice guitar and very nice playing! Now play some Ani!

  • fantastic!

  • pretty insane projection/sustain. not sure if it's my timbre though... a bit surprisingly bright for cedar. can this be ordered from the uk?

  • I just had an orgasm.

I would max out 4 credit cards just to buy this guitar if it were available over here.

  • I had one of these in the late 90's, when it was the Bob Weir signature Yairi guitar. Mine was Indian RW w/ cedar top, and it was was a guitar that LOVED to be rode hard and put away wet. And then it was all fingerstyle pillow talk. That guitar did everything for me. Alas, I gave it away to a guy who turned out to be a rogue mongrel decrepit crawler. He pawned it for $200, and never got it back. I bet that guitar is in good hands again, by now. Mojo will prove out, y'know. -edwinson
