The Confederate cavalry was NOT made up of "southern aristocrats". Its was made up of rank and file young men, mostly farm boys, who knew how to ride, and who brought their own mounts with them. Ashby's 7th VA cavalry swelled to over 1,200 men by the spring of 1862, and there weren't enough "aristocrats" in the Shenandoah Valley to provide that many cavalrymen in just one regiment.
