This song is a fun celebration of human mommy milk. It celebrates breast milk's wondrous power of healing, bonding, protection and comfort. I wrote this song for my youngest daughter who would not have been breastfed if I had listened to her doctors.
Here is her "Mommy Milk" story:
When my daughter was born, she came out too quickly with fluid still in her lungs. She was put immediately into the Natal Intensive Care Unit, (NICU). When I asked permission to breastfeed her, the NICU doctor refused. We argued for a long time. Finally he accused me,
"Do you want to suffocate your child?" I was torn outside from the delivery. This tore me inside. Still I didn't give up.
"No," I said, "that is not why I want to breastfeed my child. She is attached to every monitoring devise possible. Please let me just try breastfeeding and if her oxygen level changes, I will stop immediately."
At last, he let me try. As soon as my baby latched to my breast, her oxygen level did change. It went up! The doctor was converted and happily allowed me to continue breastfeeding. I thought my breastfeeding troubles were over, but what I hadn't realized is that this doctor's shift was coming to an end. When it was time for the next feeding there was a new doctor refusing to let me breastfeed. He was worried that my milk couldn't have come in enough yet, so he put my daughter on intravenous sugar water. "Breast milk is the best thing for healthy babies but not necessarily for sick babies," he said. "Don't you trust me."
Frustrated, I pumped, only to then have to deal with a NICU nurse who was so used to formula, that she thought she had to throw out the breast milk. Finally, after proving I was making enough milk, I was allowed to breastfeed my baby in brief intervals that wouldn't interfere with the NICU schedule. Then the next doctor arrived.
By this point my daughter had developed jaundice, which was this third doctor's reason for limiting my breastfeeding; my daughter had to stay under the lights.
With my husband's help, I persevered and it paid off. When the first doctor retur5ned in rotation, he was my new advocate. He even convinced the administration to give me an extra day in the hospital so that I could continue to breastfeed my child.
Thanks, I believe, in large part to mommy milk, my daughter's recovery speed surpassed the doctors' best expectations. I was able to take her home with me and continue a beautiful breastfeeding experience.

Mommy, mommy milk
Yummy mummy milk
In your tummy milk feels so good
It's not from a sheep
It's not from a cow
It comes from your mom
Though I don't know how
It's mommy, mommy milk
Yummy mommy milk
In your tummy milk feels so good
When you're feeling sick
When you've got a cold
When you get hurt
I'm glad you're not too old
For:
Mommy, mommy milk
Yummy mommy milk
In your tummy milk feels so good
You snuggle in close
Don't pinch or bite
You have mommy milk
And it's all alright
Thanks:
Mommy, mommy milk
Yummy mommy milk
In your tummy milk feels so good.

dear Cara,
First let me tell you how much i love your song! My children Love it and the song it just seems to sooth them. My daughter Tia, just entered the 1st grade and she is getting teased because I still breastfeed her, it just a suckle every now and then, but she seems to tell everybody in her class, do you think i should tell her not to share this but at the same time i want her to be herself, so what should i do about this? also what age should i absolutely need to stop? Dear Tammy,
I am so glad you and your children enjoy my song. Thank you for letting me know! Kids can be mean to other kids that are different. (The next song I plan to post will be about anti-bullying.) It is important that you let your daughter know that it is still fine, even sometime great, to be different. However, sometimes, something personal, like being breastfed, is best kept private. I also believe the age you stop is entirely up to you and your daughter. Good luck!
