...with clips from the movie! This is Part 1, where Eric and J.D., two unorthodox film critics at Scene-Stealers.com (and contestants on VH1's 2007 World Series of Pop Culture as Westerburg High), review Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's update of "Willy Wonka," the summer smash hit "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Not a great movie, but still probably better than the original.

YEAH RIGHT! I love both movies, but I just barely enjoy the Tim Burton version more, mainly because of a more detailed and elaborate story with not only the same message on learning from past mistakes that the book is known for, but also the value of family; not only subtle, but really works well. I guess its because originality is at stake in movies today, so it was nice to see something new. In other words, this movie is NOT garbage. To be fair, I also liked Alice in Wonderland.

How do you take on the performance Gene Wilder gave in the original? We know Depp can sing after he did "Sweeney Todd" but he really didn't show off any talent here. This is a commercial piece of garbage, way below the standards Tim Burton used to live up to. I'm glad Burton redeemed himself with Alice because this movie is nowhere near what it should have been. Wonka rather than being the mad genius he was in the original is personally flawed, lacking a father figure. Stupid remake

Same thing here. Even though I loved both movies, I enjoyed the new one a little more because it added some new material so it isn't a complete rehash, as well as ended on a triumphant note and remaining as close to the book as possible. Sorry Sshelly34213, but I disagree with you.

Are you shitting me?
They build up to every scene in this film and then let you down.
The old film builds up to each scene and then amazes you with what happens next.
The new one is completely ridiculous and destroys the character of Willy Wonka. Like Gene's Wonka would allow daddy issues to stop him from doing his thing. Depp doesn't even look like he can get up and run that factory? How is he able to take care of him and Deep Roy?

Depp is hilarious to 14 year olds.
New Charlie is Jesus Christ, old Charlie was a normal human being. Why exactly do we care if New Charlie gets the factory? he's pretty content living in abject poverty with a hole in his roof, Old Charlie actually waned it.
Johnny Depp looks like a pedo and sounds like MJ.
Deep Roy is not an Oompa Loompa.
The only kids that even lived up to their predecessor were Violet and Mike, everyone else sucked. Augustus had such a small role I thought he was CGI.

The backstory was such SIHT, Charlie is living in abject poverty and has a hole in his roof, his dad just got fired but we're supposed to feel sorry for Depp? Oh but it's so ironic! Charlie has nothing and is happy and Depp has everything and isn't...*VOMIT
The whole Wonka needs people idea was much more subtle in the old one. Depp's Wonka is self loathing and takes his misery out on everyone.
It's been 4 years and no one remembers CC&CF, but people can quote entire scenes from WW.
