@alirobs2 thats where my money lies! the AWS can be bitch if it plays up! I was on a pacer unit years ago the suffered a similar problem near Stalybridge! cue 60 very upset passengers!

The wheel fire seems obvious to me, that was the brakes !!!
As for panic, forgetting things etc etc, being as its a track survey train I guess they were testing being as it was late at night when not many people are standing about.
What I do find odd is that the coaches have breaks don't they ? Or is it just some coaches ?

maybe someone took the wrong train and tought it stopped here, an when he realised it didn't he pulled the E-Brake.
