i find it funny how the Prius gets 30mpg. the battery alone makes me laugh. they got to the ends of the earth to find rare Nickel to make the Battery for it. its more harmfull to the invornment to make one of these batterys. the batterys on these cars last 5 years and cost a few grand to replace one battery. i worked on a few six banger darts or dusters that got better gas milage than the Prius.

its amazing how most of the cars in the junkyard still run.. i've been lucky enough to pull 4 really good engines from there..if i had the time any money i'd pull alot more..

@GM572 not to mention draining any fermented fuel, if any.

Looks like a "71", Is it?

@GM572 it would be even better to mix some acetone with the oil, approx. in 1:1 proportion and leave this compound in the cylinders for one night. That is the standard procedure for starting an engine which is sitting for some years. The engine will smoke ALOT when it starts, but the piston rings will not damage cylinder surfaces, which is almost inevitable if you try to start such an engine without lubrication. You'll have to change the oil after about 10 miles after.
Quick tip for when you try starting up old engines that are sitting for a really long time: take out the spark plugs, take a can of clean motor oil and a syringe and put some oil in each cylinder. Not much, about 2-3 teaspoons. The take a wrench and manually crank the engine. Give it a few good cranks. When you will actually start it up, it will move easily and it will start faster. It will burn the oil in the first couple of minutes and it will start safely.

Well I had a fresh battery and had only tryed cranking the engine a few times. I also jumped the starter at the solenoid and gave it a few good wacks with a hammer.

it work?

No the starter didn't come back to life. It was cranking very slow for a fresh battery and new cables so i'm guessing it was already in bad shape. I hope the car still in the junkyard next time go up. I'll bring a spare starter this time.
