That´s the tragedy of many sabras. I am from Sephardi descent through my mother (which technically makes me a Jew), but my German background has given me a big touch with traditional Ashkenazi stetl traditions. At least be sure that this half-goy who is writing to you sometimes sings Yiddish songs all by himself in far South America, and who knows someone else might join me.

You and me know, but the generation after us don´t care a d*mn, and you know that. We should keep the flame burning to stop mad Iranian and Venezuelan presidents from telling the world this all never happened. Yad Vashem!

Albert how are you? I stumbled across this. I hope that you are well. I wrote you a few years back to thank you for the Yiddish songs that you post. This is just so wonderful. As for the person who wants to know how to find the music. It's out there. Check with YIVO in NYCity as to where to find it. A Zei Guzunt. Be Well, Gitl Oh yes and Albert: LaShanah Tovah!!!!!!!!!!!

@Yosefa07 -- Yiddish lives.. for me, when in Eretz Israel, its a bridge to communicate with Russian olim.

@albertdiner -- exactly I was thinking the very same thing as i watched this video and later saw the movie!! It stung deep in my heart realizing the Holocaust was only 3 years away (1939).. However I rejoice greatly in the re-birth of Eretz Israel, the Land that was promised to the Jewish people and see, they are returning and have rebuild Israel into the garding of Eden. Ez.36:35 -- as haShem promised through Ezekiel He would do. Yiddish definately didn't die, it lives!

@joeocho88 Barbra Streisand hasn't sung it, perhaps, but this song has recently been brought back to life in Poland. In 2002 a populat and very talented Polish singer, Justyna Steczkowska created a great show of Jewish music, first as a theatrical perforamnce and later recorded and published as a CD and then a DVD. It is called "ALKIMJA" and contains also Yidl Mitn Fidl sung in Polish. The whole project was very well received in Poland.

@avginkel I think only a few people really believe that "the Holocaust never happened", and people who spout such silliness publicly (like Ahmadinejad and Chavez) are generally regarded by people as having a few screws loose and are relagted to people who scream "the gubmint is fluoridatin' my water" and "I'm wearing this hat made out of aluminium foil to keep out the rays that aliens from outer space are broadcasting".

I showed this clip to my elderly Uncle Moishe, who remembered when this movie first showed on the Lower East Side of New York. He said that scenes were filmed in Lodz, Poland, and that many of the immigrants who now lived in New York will get tears in their eyes when seeing this nostalgic and sentimental piece.

I have noticed that hassidim with large families still use yiddish to communicate,
even in Israel and Europe. You see children
speaking yiddish. The language will not
disappear.

It is a fact, Molly Picon was invited and brought to Poland by Jewish film milieu to make this picture. A few years it was even shown on our Kultura TV channel.
Thank you - it is a treasure.
I have one recording by Miss Picon from 30.

thanks for your comments. To think that in 1936 there
were more than 3 million jews in poland, and that
Kristallnacht was only 2 years away. It is fascinating to watch when one thinks of the calamity
that was just months away. The jews lived 800 years
in Poland.
