"Is there any chance that this Genesis 1 model of mine is "region-free"? any/all help is appreciated."
With a game inserted, turn on the console.
If the system goes straight to the game without displaying "PRODUCED BY OR UNDER LICENSE FROM SEGA ENTERPRISES" on startup, then it's "region free" for all NTSC Sega Genesis/Mega Drive titles.
for my American genesis 1 model I only have the EXT. port as you showed. or the one that you said that was possibly intended to link two Genesis models for multiplayer. Unfortunately it does not say "High Definition Graphics" on it. Is there any chance that this Genesis 1 model of mine is "region-free"? any/all help is appreciated.
@The16bitwarrior region locking and color encoding are two very different issues. Region locking means you can only run games distributed in Europe on an European Mega Drive, and etc. Color encoding means you can only plug your European Mega Drive in an European TV, and etc.
If you're in Europe, your only concern is to buy a region-free Mega Drive.
just because the mega drive is region free you have the ntsc to pal problem to over come. The best version is the asian pal mega drive out puts in pal and i think ntsc.

I say mod that sucker anyway! :)
my asian model 1 was region free anyway, but I wanted to put the 50.60Hz switch, JAP/ENG switch and overclock it anyway lol.
