We Made a Devils Bargain: Fmr. President Clinton Apologizes for Trade Policies that Destroyed Haitian Rice Farming

President Bill Clinton, now the UN Special Envoy to Haiti, publicly apologized last month for forcing Haiti to drop tariffs on imported, subsidized US rice during his time in office. The policy wiped out Haitian rice farming and seriously damaged Haitis ability to be self-sufficient. On Wednesday, journalist Kim Ives of Haiti Liberté questioned Clinton about his change of heart and his stance on the return of ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

  • Why is it that U.S. presidents become so wise AFTER they leave office?

  • Haha "it's failed everywhere it's been applied"? Definitely not for the wealthy elite of the country and U.S. multinationals.

  • mistake my ass he knew wat the fuk he was up too, God see's and knows everything, what goes around comes around???###!!!!!!!! that i know

  • Don’t ever believe this Con Man! Admitting this truth and showing empathy is a poker move for something bigger, Oil. He was the Architect that design NAFTA trade agreement while adding Embargoes that finally destroyed Mexico’s and Haiti’s GDP. Ironic he gets to manage all the Earthquake recovery money and nothing getting done except Building Hotels! No wonder his heart is failing. This was before he went into triple bypass surgery and more like a death bed confession to save his Heartless Soul

  • It's funny when he says that HE has to live with the consequences. Like, fk all the Haitians, it's the consequences to HIM that matter. These people are so so sick.

  • @bettysman because they seem to be so careless during their time in office and seemingly insulated for the real world + real time implications of their decisions..

  • @MegaFairandsquare Please stop being a Clinton apologist. He's a crook, and if he was truly sorry, as the so-called special envoy to Haiti, he should pressure the government to stop importing the bleached rice to Haiti. His mea culpa is not enough - and neither is apologizing. How about we actually change the policies that are actually worst today then they were in 1994.

  • Bottom line...he admitted his mistake & we can't change the past. He seems dedicated to make up for what he did & diligently proving it. If he has any intention of wrongdoing haiti again, he would have kept this past issue silent. Give him a chance please. So far, he is the only respectable leader standing for Haiti right now.

  • ‎"it was a mistake!!! it was a mistake that i was a party too. im not pointing fingers to anybody. i did that. i have to live everyday with the consequences of the lost capacity to produce a rice crop in Haiti to feed those people. because... of what i did. nobody else."

At least he accepts his mistake. Not something common an American would do.

  • this lunatic is a complete psychopath
