You dont have to be connected to wifi, you use your 3g connection. and you pay per mb you download when u use google maps. So when you buy your iphone from a provider buy with free data, and you dont have to worry about that.

just got an iphone 4 and the compass has not extra features within the maps app as far as i can see (over the 3G) its not doing the rotating thing you are doing
