Pinky Loo is perhaps the only Malaysian who is trained to perform the Bai Lian ( meaning a hundred faces) Dance of the Sichuan Opera.
This mystical and magical performance originated as an art form about 300 years ago by the Sichuan Opera.
Legend has it that a hero who is the Chinese version of Robin Hood robbed from the rich to help the poor and to escape from capture he could change his face many times.
With a swipe of the hand, the dancer will like magic change the mask on his face. Each change follows the mood of the performer or dance.
This magic mask changing trick is a closely guarded secret and the Chinese Government has applied for Heritage status from Unesco to preserve this art form and claiming it to be a national treasure. In China, the techniques of mask changing is passed down from one generation to the next but seldom pass on to the daughters.
The World Record for face changing mask is 25, at the rate of one change per second.
Ms Pinky has spent 5 years learning to perform and in 2007 she was voted the Magician of the Year in Malaysia.
Together with other students from the Regal Orchestra Academy in Petaling Jaya she was performing the Bai Lian Dance at the Summit Plaza in Subang Jaya in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festivities.
I would rate it a 5 star performance.
