Actually, MJ, Clapton and Collins had nothing to do with the original version of the song. The original version was produced way back in 1978 by YMO, written by member Ryuichi Sakamoto, as an instrumental. In 1979, Chris Mosdell added lyrics which were sung by Sakamoto through a vocoder, and released in their 1979 album "Solid State Survivor". And then around 1980-1982, MJ added some more lyrics, which were included in all later versions of the song.
