Josquin des Prez (c. 1450 to 1455 August 27, 1521),

La Chapelle Royale; Philippe Herreweghe, director

Josquin des Prez often referred to simply as Josquin, was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance. He is also known as Josquin Desprez, a French rendering of Dutch "Josken van de Velde", diminutive of "Joseph van de Velde" ("of the fields"), and Latinized as Josquinus Pratensis, alternatively Jodocus Pratensis. He was the most famous European composer between Guillaume Dufay and Palestrina, and is usually considered to be the central figure of the Franco-Flemish School. Josquin is widely considered by music scholars to be the first master of the high Renaissance style of polyphonic vocal music that was emerging during his life.

A motet was something of a standard chant that composers would work within and elaborate. Somewhat like a jazz standard or a folk melody if you will.

  • Awesome piece...a song, technically, or motet, more specifically.

Just to to clarify, a motet is a kind of song, right? I saw comments on here disputing that. Any music meant to be sung is a song, and a motet is a type of choral music, right? Most choral music is sung (as is this one), so I assume that almost all motets (including this one) are songs.

Correct me if I am wrong. I'm not a master of music terminology.

  • s small tidbit i found somewhere: Josquin was Anne Boleyn's favourite composer. But I cant remember where I read it and cannot attest to it

  • @MatchaCUB ~ watch out that you don't tumble over your arrogance and delusions of grandeur. I recommend that you educate yourself about the significant and wonderful contributions bartje11 shares with so many of us here on YouTube ~ and then ~may I suggest, that you come back here and place the very much called for apology.

  • @bartje11 I know, it was very rude from that person. We all have our ignorances and it's good to share our knowledge! Thank you for posting so many beautiful pieces. Think of all the people who discover them thanks to you:)

  • @mary18674 Excuse me? I am accused of ignorance. I made a mistake but to call me ignorant after posting thousands of beautiful pieces of music, a work out of love for the arts, is highly offensive to me. I have a problem with rude people.

  • @bartje11 Please don't fight, this beautiful song is gracious and pleades for peace.

The statue you see on the picture is of Sainte Thérèse of Lisieux, a humble young french girl who gave her life to Jesus in the religious life at 15 years old and wrote about the "little voice" she followed to love God and human beings more and more. She died of tuberculosis, saying that she would do many good things on earth when she would be in paradise. Her life was entirely humility and forgiveness.

  • just for clarification, that's not a statue of Mary either. not every veiled creature is Mary as some might have you believe through their own ignorance, but any Catholic would know this.

  • Il Tactus è sbagliato!

  • sweet song
