For my tastes, this is by far the superior version, because it's believable. The Boyer/Bergman version is melodramatic and unconvincing. It looks beautiful but does not effectively tell the story. Thorold Dickinson's version here, by contrast, feels authentic and is much more believable and unsettling.
I would love to see this again, but all I can get hold of is the MGM remake with Bergman. I've been told that this is a better film, and MGM tired to suppress it when the remake came out.. Does anyone know about this???
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my new clip of 1930's cigarette cards of Anton Walbrook, George Formby, Errol Flynn, Gracie Fields, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire, and Vivien Leigh.
excellent movie!!!!!

This one is a lot darker than the other version. Was the maid who ran out of the house the old woman from The lady killers?
Thanks for the upload.

This is a fantastic film, and it is wonderful that it escaped from being destroyed.
It is much more sinister, realistic, and Victorian than the US version.
