In summer of 2008 my wife and I dived the Blue Pool at Bermagui, situated about half way between Melbourne and Sydney on the New South Wales south coast. What we found in the shallows was a myriad of rock boulders, kelp, caves and in one cave, a dozen Port Jackson Sharks. This was Miranda's first open water dive outside of her scuba course and an eye opener on a site she had been swimming at since a little girl during her family holidays in the 1960's and 70's.
Port Jackson's are Horned Sharks, unique to Australia and very docile, often found in large numbers... where they lie motionless. They don't have teeth, except a jaw which is like two serrated plates... useful for crushing shellfish.
They aren't really a threat to divers and are fun to dive with.

  • great footage mate. loved the vid. what camera did you use?

  • @uncledan75 I used the Canon MV1 in Amphibico Housing... this is now a system which is 14 years old but still shoots beautiful quality, more so underwater! The quality of footage on this video is crappy - I'd like to upload a higher res version.

  • All the footage was shot to the right of the actual pool. We entered the water just near the pool in a safe area, and descended to about 6 metres maximum depth and swam about 100-150 metres along the shoreline and about 50 metres off the edge. It was all within the rocky reef area though as we didn't see much sandy area. A day earlier I had snorkelled with a massive school of big Salmon around me, but we missed them on this dive. Still we found the Port Jackson Sharks and many others.
