  • Wow! How did you teach your bird to do that? I have a male bird, his name is Poco and he's the first bird I've ever owned. He can say quite a few things and he even sings songs, but I have no clue how to teach him tricks.

  • @Rhyme27 HI! This trick I taught him by just putting him on his back in my hand and praised him if he held it longer. I have also taught him with a clicker. You can google clicker training for birds and there is a yahoo group to support people trying to train. It takes some consistency though.

  • I had a parrotlet that I named Verdie Birdie. I had her for five years, she was a gift from my daughter. She was the most lovable little soul! She had beak problems from the beginning and I would have to have her beak trimmed every month. Then all of sudden she became ill and died in my hands one day. The local lady who had been bred her I found out later, was interbreeding her birds. Was very heartbreaking. Be careful where you purchase your pet.

  • @Rustydymon That is heartbreaking. I too purchased from a breeder with questionable stock. My first two parrotlets died before their first year. They were the sweetest birds and bonded with me immediately but I never went back to that breeder for fear of similar outcomes. All the best to you.

  • @boombella Thank you for your kind comment. You know, I still miss that dear little thing so much, and it's been a number of years now. I have shied away from getting another bird for fear of the same heart break. I've just checked the prices of Parrotlets too, recently and I can't believe how much they are now! It is a good thing, that way people will not take the responsibility of a pet lightly. My little Verdie Birdie was a green rump and she cost $50. at the time. Worth every penny and more!

  • @Rustydymon Oh, I know. I still miss my others. I've been extremely lucky. Bean is 10 years old. He cost me $100 back then. I love him to pieces and he is such a great companion. Perhaps some day you'll get another. It is a 100% emotional commitment though.

  • How cute! What a cute lil beaner! How did you teach him to do that? very clever.

  • @blasteryui well... I did not really teach him. He sort of did it and then we practiced longer and longer holds. I would not do it if your bird does not like to be on its back. Some parrots hate that and others don' t mind. If your bird struggles with it, that means he probably does not like it. You should not push it because it might break his trust of you. Trust is hard to get back once broken. good luck! remember to praise him well if he does the trick.

  • i never knew birds were so smart

  • @Rustydymon

Awwww that's so sad. I got mine from a really good friend, he's 5 now but I don't know where he got him.

  • Adorable!

  • @polks6 it took my plet a month to completely warm up with me. just be patient and talk to him a lot. I started trying to teach him step up immediately. However, at first I had to use a stick because he would try to bite me. millet is your best friend when trying to train. try having him eat it out of your hand and with the step up trick :)
