My Bow Orel turntable with the Orel 2 unipivot wooden tonearm, and my favorite track from Yes: Tormato: "Release, Release"

some more pics here:

the metal parts are mostly handmade by me. The (uni)pivot is from a clock :). antiskating is magnetic. the counterwight is 2 aluminium tubes joined and filled with lead. im really proud of that. some other parts on the arm are also filled with lead and pitch (bitumen). The wooden part is lilac wood that stayed dry for 30 years on my fathers shelf.

  • im thinking of making a turntable myself, but how would I know the right distance from the arm to the center of the record? things like, if I need a curved arm or straight and such. And a motor that could do 33/45 rpm etc.

(id like to make the tonearm myself)

Oh and very impressive, it looks great!

  • @snelpiller Good luck :) ! I think it is best to read a lot on the topic before starting the design. I should have read more before too. i have a quite detailed book on the topic but unfortunatelly it is in hungarian.

The distance between the arm pivot and the record center is your choice, but a lot of things have to be considered (overhang, etc). the straight arm is a more common choice and easier to DIY.

  • nice job. can you tell or show more about the arm? did you machine or scavenge the metal stuff? what's the pivot? position?

  • HI

some more pics (links) in the description.
