@1037pm Negative, slats and speed brakes are two different surfaces, slats allow the wing to operate at higher AoA providing more lift. Speedbrakes slow you down. All control surfaces create drag when operated, slowing you down somewhat.

@momarytube The slats (on the leading edge of the wings) are controlled with the flap lever. They automatically retract on the 747-400 when reverse thrust is used to avoid damaging them. The ailerons are controlled with the flight yoke, left to bank left, right to bank right. The trim lever allows the pilot to trim the elevators for take-off and in-flight.
